Jaylen Paige season ended in the wrestlebacks of the State Tournament. The loss beings an end to Paige's high school career that saw him finish with a 52-16 record, and become the program's first State Qualifier since it was re-established in 2007.

Asbury Park enters the season coming off a high mark 2017, where the program set a team record for wins in a season, and advanced three wrestlers to the Regions, for the first time since the program was resurrected in 2007. Two of the District medal winners have graduated, but last year's champion, Jaylen Paige does return to an otherwise relatively inexperience group.

The upper portion of the lineup is where the Blue Bishops return the bulk of their experience. Obviously Paige is the big name. Expected to see time at 220 & heavyweight, Paige will attempt to become the first two-time District Champ at AP since Domingo Perez won back to back titles in 2012 & 2013. He'll also take aim at giving the Bishops their first State qualifier since the program was re-established. Returning starters Kyrie Moore and Scion Leach also return, and Milton Simmons has 17 matches of varsity experience, despite not wrestling last season. That foursome can provide veteran leadership for an upperweight group that has a lot of youngsters, including four frosh in Derrick Coates, Donte Moore, Jarred Chathuant, and Avante Barnes.

Down low, Asbury will have returning starters Johnny Jackson and Daniel Simmons, both juniors, back. Senior Kevin Reeves, a starter as a freshman, is also back, and those three can also provide leadership for an otherwise very young group.

Again, outside of the upperweights, this is a very young group that will have a lot of new faces in the room. The good news is that the numbers are good, and Asbury has the ability to field a lineup. The success of Paige, Tyrone Bailey, and Fenelson Etienne last season has set a good tone in the room that the kids can buy into that if they put the work in, they can get results. It should also be noted that the middle school program is in the midst of its first season, and the program is looking forward to not only the increase in numbers, but numbers with experience. In the meantime, the team will work to improve each time out, and can take a shot at topping last year's win total, while also trying to have some repeat success in the individual post-season tournaments.
